Review Day

Today in class, on February 28, we took notes from a powerpoint. I was happy because it was not too cold in the classroom today. Usually it is around negative 20 degrees. The next class we have, we will be taking a test so we needed to get notes from a powerpoint. We were able to finish the notes so we had some free time at the end of class. I enjoyed having time to write my blog and have some free time. This is the last class of the day and after I have softball. We are gonna be really cold because it is around 35 degrees outside. Yesterday it was really cold as well so I am not looking forward to today.

Independent Work

Today in class, on February 27, we were given a paper to fill out. At the beginning of class it was really cold and I went to go get my sweatshirt and earbuds so I could listen to music while I did my worksheet. The front of the paper was just filling out definitions. Some of the definitions that were on the paper were some of the definitions I looked up in my blog yesterday. Some definitions I did not have were cataracts, nome, dynasty, ka, and maat. The definition of cataract is many small boulders breaking the surface of a body of water, like in the Nile. Another example is a nome which means a territorial division of ancient Egypt. Then the backside was fill in the blanks but we got to skip 15-19.

Three ways the Nile influenced Egypt were
  1. Yearly flooding which made the soil fertile and leaving silt allowing the Egyptians to grow crops on it.
  2. helped to unite upper and lower Egypt because it was a source of transportation between them both.
  3. the Nile influenced where people lived so they could have a constant source of water
The pyramids were built because most of them were tombs for a pharaoh who had died. They believed in an afterlife and if they made a grand tomb and put riches in the tomb, the pharaoh would have a good afterlife.

Test Day

Today in class we took a quiz and did our blogs.
Delta: where a river divides into many smaller channels
Narmer: an ancient Egyptian king during the early dynastic period
pharaoh: a ruler in ancient Egypt
theocracy: a government where priests rule through the power of God
pyramid: a royal tomb in ancient Egypt
mummification: a process of preserving a dead body
hieroglyphics: ancient Egyptian and other writing systems consisting of symbols and marks
papyrus: material used by ancient Egyptians and Mediterraneans to write and make tools
  1. The desert benefitted Egypt because it kept out invaders and prevented constant warfare.
  2. The Egyptians viewed the Pharaoh as a God who had full responsibility for the kingdom.
  3. Egyptians mummified bodies to preserve them for the afterlife.

Textbook Notes

Today in class, on February 22, we took notes from the textbook. It is Friday and I am glad this is the last day of the week. I have a bad schedule because I don't have gym or off today and the classes are shortened so the day feels really long. This the first time in a while where we have had a normal class schedule. The past weeks or so we have a lot of 2 hour delays or assembly's so the classes have been shorter. At the beginning of class we turned in our homework and classwork. They were both about Hammurabi's code. I got mine back already and I got an 8/8 so that is good. Also, we have a test on February 26th so I am going to have to study soon.

Hammurabi's Code

Today in class, on Thursday, February 21,  we did not take notes so we did something different in class. We were given a paper on Hammurabi's code and we were given a sample of a person's situation. From this sample, we were supposed to decide the punishment for the person. An example of one is, a man who is accused of robbing a home stands before you. After reviewing the evidence, you find that he is guilty of robbery. What will his punishment be? My answer was they should make him work until he pays for the things he stole. Hammurabi's law said that the robber should die because of this crime. There were 6 scenario's like this and we had to answer them with our own answers and compare them to Hammurabi's code.

2/15/19

Today in class, on February 15, we took notes from the powerpoint. It is Friday and I am really excited for the weekend. This is the last class of the day and I just want to leave but at least we did not do too much in class so it was not bad. I did not have off or gym today so it was a long day for me. Mr. Schick got a new laser pointer for his powerpoints that he was excited about. Then we took more notes on Mesopotamia. Then at the end of the class, we got to write our blogs. This was nice so I don't have to do it over the weekend and worry about it tonight or tomorrow.

Hammurabi's code

Today in class, on February 14, it was valentines and we started the class talking about Valentine and what he was important for. Our class was very talkative today because it is the end of the day but we eventually quieted down. We had a normal bell today which I feel like we have not had in so long due to snow. The classes today have felt long and boring. We started taking notes on a powerpoint and continued where we left off yesterday. At the end of class we all read Hammurabi's code.

Powerpoint Notes

In class today we got out tests back and I got a 93. I did better on the essay than I did on the objective but overall I still did really well. This brought my grade up a lot too which I needed in this class, This is the only class I am not doing that well in but I am doing better. The pop quiz killed my grade but I am slowly started to bring it up., Because of the 2 hour delay we had only 40 minute classes, and I don't really remember what we did for the rest of class. I know we looked at the new power point and took notes on it, but we only did that for maybe 10 minutes.

Taking Notes pt.2

Today in class, on February 8, we finished taking notes on the chapter we were reading yesterday. Some things I took notes on are: during the reign of Hammurabi the Babylonian empire took over Mesopotamia. Hammurabi's code holds people responsible for their actions. The code sets different punishments for rich, poor, men, and women. For example, the analogy used in the textbook was a tooth for a tooth and an eye for an eye. The purpose of laws is to promote good behavior but also may be to punish bad behavior. Two centuries later, the weakening Babylonian empire fell to the Kassites and the fertile crescent was conquered by them and other new groups. Assyrians, Phoenicians, and Hebrews adopted the early ideas of Sumerians.

Taking Notes

Today in class, on February 7, we read the textbook and took notes on chapter 2. We had to take notes on pages 27-34, which was not too long. I took about a page and a half of notes on these pages. We were given about 30 minutes to take all the notes we could and then we discussed the notes. I did not really like how we did this because the textbook was boring and I felt like I might have been missing information. I did not really read the introduction of the chapter either so I was missing some of the notes that we discussed in class. I did not have anywhere to add these notes and it felt very unorganized. Also, my notes on the Guns, Germs, and Steel video felt unorganized as well and I prefer taking notes from the powerpoint.

Test Day

Today in class, on February 5, we took a test on the video called Guns, Germs, and Steel that we have been watching for the previous 5 days in class. I prepared for the test by looking at my blogs and reading my notes. I took time to study the different animals that were domesticated and the change in hunting and gathering along with all the other notes. I thought the test was not too difficult but not easy either and I had forgotten two out of the 14 animals but the last two were just extra credit. I remembered the pig, cow, sheep, goat, donkey, horse, yak, mython, llama, Bactrian camel, Arabian camel, and the water buffalo. The two I did not remember were the reindeer and the Bali cattle. Overall I think I will get a good grade on this test, which I am happy about and hope it will bring up my grade.

Video Day Pt. 5

Today in class, on February 4, we continued watching the video on Jared Diamond and Guns, Germs, and Steel. This part of the video was about how communities advanced by stopping hunting and gathering and starting to make a community. The Gwar is 9,000 years old and was the first place people began functioning and living in a community. Many of the other places that developed are the same latitude of the fertile crescent, which means they have the same climate and vegetation. About 500 years ago there was no cattle or wheat in the Americas at all. Now there is 100 million cattle and 20 tons of wheat being consumed a year. We have a test tomorrow on this video and I am going to use my notes and blogs to study for it and hope I don't fail.
