Greek Notes

Today in class we took notes on Ancient Greece:

  • Greeks were warlike people
  • Athens had a great infantry but an even better navy 
  • trireme: most effective weapon, fastest ship, 170 men on board, can bash into other ships and destroy them 
  • phalanx: dense groups of warriors
    • armed with long spears and shields 
    • advance slowly till they broke through raids 
persian empire vs. greece
  • persian empire is much larger with more soldiers and resources 
Greek army
  • iron weapons that were cheap so everyone had them 
  • hopelites trained from a young age 
  • armed with spears, swords, and shields 
  • phalanx formation 
  • home-field advantage 
  • very motivated to protect their democracy 
Persian army 
  • first archers 
  • then, calvary to disrupt soldiers and leaders 
  • lightly armored infantry 
  • huge numbers
  • long way from home
  • professional army 
victorious greeks form the delian league
