More Notes on Greece

Today in class we took notes from the powerpoint. These are some of my notes: Politics consisted of no women, no middle class, and no slaves. Tyranny's had alliances with hoplites, or skilled soldiers, to make a government. The many different definitions of tyrants vary due to the time era.

  • Tyrants are someone who rules outside the framework of the polis
  • A tyrnant now means, an abusive leader
  • a tyrant in ancient Greece meant someone who seized power 
Draco (621 BC) 
  • all athenians are equal under the law
  • death is a punishment for many crimes
  • debt slavery is ok
  • draconian means unnecessarily harsh 
Solon's reforms 
  • outlawed debt slavery 
  • all athenian citizens can speak at the assemblies 
  • any citizen can press charges to submit laws for debate at the assembly 
More reforms
  • allowed all citizens to submit laws for debate at the assembly 
  • created council of 500 who were randomly chosen people 
Free, adult male, property owner who was born in Athens arcitizensns
