Friday Class

We took a few notes in class and read the textbook. My notes from the powerpoint and the first few pages of the textbook were greek government structures.
Polis: fundamental political city made up of a city or surrounding countryside
Monarchy: rule by a single person
aristocracy: rule by small groups of nobles and landowning families
oligarchy: wealthy groups ruled by a few powerful people who were dissatisfied with aristocratic rule
tyrant: powerful individuals who seized control by appealing to the common people for support
-good connotation who had good intentions

  • Later, democracy was introduced to Greece and went through a few changes. People were arranged in political groups due to wealth but it was changed to location.
  • Only sons of wealthy families could attend school where they learned book smarts along with logical skills. Girls could not attend school but other women figures taught them things to know around the house and becoming good wives.
  • Sparta became a strong military state unlike most of the rest of Greece
    • daily life of Spartans was all about training for the military which included women and men. Women had a pretty big role in daily life of Spartans especially when men were off to war
